FCS Express Version 4 has been almost completely re-written from the ground up to support the huge amount of new functionality that is present. The focus of this new release has been to allow you to get your results even quicker and easier than before.
Your results are not just the statistics from a single layout, the result of the experiment often requires you to compare data across many days and samples. Our new tools allow you to do just that, and still have your results update instantly as you change your gating strategy.
Image Cytometry
We are pleased to release FCS Express 4 Image Cytometry. This new product brings all the advanced tools from our 10 years of flow cytometry data analysis experience to Image Cytometry.
- Gate on images of your cells
- View cell galleries of your cells of interest
- Reads data from multiple image formats
- Plate based Image Cytometry is available
Enhanced User Interface
FCS Express has a brand new user interface, based on the Office 2007/2010 ribbon control. The ribbon is completely customizable, allowing you to organize your menus any way you like.
The new interface also allows you to view multiple (up to 4) pages at the same time and to drag and drop plots between them. Pages can be named and you can navigate between pages by clicking on the convenient tabs at the bottom of the layout.
Speed
FCS Express V4 has been optimized for speed through the application. FCS Express now takes advantage of all the CPUs in your computer for computationally intensive processes such as gating, compensation, statistics calculations, plotting data and more. Extensive architecture changes has resulted in further improvements in the speed of custom token processing and displaying data. Notably, the speed of saving layouts with embedded data has been improved by orders of magnitude.
Bar and Scatter Plots
Often you need to compare multiple samples using bar or scatter plots. In FCS Express V3 and all other flow software you would have to export your statistics to a graphing program and create bar and scatter plots there. However, if you needed to change your gating strategy, you would have to go through the entire export process again.
You can now create bar and/or scatter plots right within FCS Express V4. The bar and scatter plots update in real time as you change your gates. You can graph any statistic or custom token that you wish. The plots can show error bars based on your data and you can select criteria to dynamically cause bars or scatter plot points to dynamically highlight if they meet certain criteria.
You can also have FCS Express calculate regression curves based upon your data. The regressions also update automatically as you change your data and gating strategies. Antibody titrations, dose response curves and MESF calibrations have never been easier.
High Content (plate based) Analysis
FCS Express now supports sophisticated Heat Maps for both Flow and Image Cytometry. You can graph any statistic, from any parameter, gated on any gate, on a well by well basis. Choose from among many different coloring schemes.
You can also create gates on a the heat maps. Applying these gates to dot plots and histograms allows you to easily examine the populations of cells that are within the wells of interest.
Navigators
Navigators are new tools that allow you to easily obtain an overview of your layout based on different criteria. You can also drag and drop from the layout to the navigators, or vice versa, to easily rearrange your layout.
- Layout Navigator - shows you a hierarchical view of all your pages and which plots are present on each page.
- Data Navigator - shows a hierarchical view of all the data files currently used on your layout and which plots are displaying which data files
- Gate Navigator - displays a hierarchical view of all the gates in your layout and which plots are gated on which gates
Collaboration
Our new collaboration tool allows you to share your desktop with other FCS Express users.
Of course, we continue to support our industry leading publishing feature.
New Gating Features
FCS Express V4 supports many new gating features:
- Linked Gates
- Proportionally resize polygon and freeform gates
- Well gates
- Draw 1D gates directly on 2D Plots
Advanced Modelling (DNA Analysis, Kinetics, Proliferation)
FCS Express now includes DNA, Kinetics and Proliferation analysis with every professional version.
Batch Processing
There are many new features that make batch processing even more powerful and easy to use.
Custom Tokens and Alerts
- Custom tokens and Alerts can now be organized into folders.
- Custom token and Alert windows can now be docked to the side of the layout as "always open" windows
- Changes to custom tokens immediately apply to the layout, no need to press the OK button.
- Many new functions and formulas

Data Grids
Data Grids have become even more powerful than before. Data Grids can be used to show Image Galleries in FCS Express 4 Image Cytometry. You can now apply gates to data grids to only show cells of interest and you can select which parameters you wish to show in the grid. You can also back-gate onto a data grid.
New Licensing Options
FCS Express V4 now supports a new Internet Dongle and Site Licenses.
